Republican State Rep. Bidal Duran questioned whether children are actually going to school hungry in Minnesota, saying he has “yet to hear of one” while discussing the state’s universal school meals program. Duran co-authored legislation that would have scaled back Minnesota’s universal free-lunch program by limiting state-paid lunches to families earning up to 500% of the federal poverty level. Minnesota currently provides one breakfast and one lunch at no cost each school day to students at participating schools.
